Keep Calm and Play Tennis Better with Chiropractic
The role of tennis in spinal health
Tennis provides a full-body boon; in terms of spinal health, there is a net-positive benefit and it is our job as an office of chiropractic to keep it that way! At Family Chiropractic & Spinal Health Care Center, our goal is to strengthen your spine against the unique challenges that tennis presents, so that you can maintain a high level of performance on the court while preventing injuries inherent in the nature of the sport.
How tennis challenges your body
Tennis contains a unique mix of motions that we need to be aware of because of their potential for injury. These motions include:
- Twisting of the upper body: that creates shearing stresses in the muscles of the back and threatens our spinal alignment.
- Ballistic movements in the shoulders: similar to a baseball pitch or a quarterback’s throw, the different movements of the shoulder involved in the groundstrokes has the potential for pain.
- Plant-and-pivot: places an inordinate amount of stress on the weight-bearing joints of the lower body.
- Hip rotation: for generating power, hip rotation is crucial but it does create stress on the lower back and sacroiliac joints.
Tennis is a sport of repetitive movements- certain parts of the body are stressed more than others. When put together, all of these motions can create systemic stresses on the body that threaten spinal alignment and leave us vulnerable to spinal injury.
Chiropractic helps tennis players take a proactive approach to their spinal health
Chiropractic has many applications in the sport of tennis, but the chief among them is maintaining full range of motion throughout the joints of the body. Furthermore, because of the interconnectedness of the tennis swing, coordination between brain and body is essential: spinal adjustment helps alleviate pressure from spinal nerves, simultaneously improving this coordination and boosting range of motion.
